One month after WWE CEO and chairman Vince McMahon resigned from his role amid an investigation into allegations of misconduct, he's now retiring from the WWE entirely.
Today, McMahon announced his departure from the WWE via a Tweet. In a separate statement, McMahon spoke on his retirement. “As I approach 77 years old, I feel it’s time for me to retire as Chairman and CEO of WWE," he said. "Throughout the years, it’s been a privilege to help WWE bring you joy, inspire you, thrill you, surprise you, and always entertain you."
At 77, time for me to retire.
Thank you, WWE Universe.
Then. Now. Forever. Together. #WWE #thankful— Vince McMahon (@VinceMcMahon) July 22, 2022
McMahon's daughter Stephanie McMahon, who took over as interim CEO and chair after McMahon's initial departure, and president Nick Khan will step in as co-CEOs, with Stephanie also becoming the chairwoman.
Last month, McMahon stepped down as CEO and chairman of the WWE in the midst of an "investigation into alleged misconduct." The investigation was sparked after McMahon allegedly paid millions in hush money to a woman whom he had an affair with. The WWE board later uncovered more possible payouts and legal agreements with other women.
Despite stepping down from his roles as CEO and chairman, McMahon still appeared on WWE Smackdown and retained his role in WWE's creative content after the investigation began. His newest statement, however, signals his departure from the WWE entirely. McMahon founded WWE back in 1980 with his wife Linda; it made $1.1 billion in revenue just last year. It is unclear if his retirement was voluntary or a direct result of the findings of investigations into his behavior.
