The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scenes Explained

Warning: full spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad!

Now that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is out in theaters and on HBO Max, the typical comic-book movie question is being asked: Does the movie have mid- and post-credits scenes?

Well, we're here to answer all that and more! Read on…

Does The Suicide Squad Have a Post-Credit Scene?

The Suicide Squad absolutely does have an end-credits scene and a mid-credits scene, and we’re going to explain what they mean and what comes next if you want to know!

But to explain the end of DC’s The Suicide Squad, we’ll need to go into full spoilers, so beware!

The Suicide Squad Mid-Credits Scene: Weasel

The Suicide Squad mid-credits scene returns us to the Corto Maltese beach from the beginning of the movie where many Task Force X members met their grisly end. We see that Weasel (Sean Gunn) survived his apparent drowning and is back on his two furry feet.

Weasel’s watery death was played off as a joke, as the mission coordinators back at base blamed each other for not checking to make sure Weasel could swim before sending him on a mission where he would have to dive into the ocean and swim to shore. But now Weasel is alive, so who’s laughing now? Maybe he'll even show up in a Suicide Squad sequel eventually…

The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scene: Peacemaker

The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene reveals that John Cena’s Peacemaker also survived his seemingly mortal wound. Two of Amanda Waller’s subordinates, John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), check in on him recovering in a hospital, saying they need him for a new mission.

Peacemaker lost his climactic gun duel against Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and caught a teeny, tiny bullet in his neck, and though the blood gushing from his neck looked convincingly fatal, it turns out he managed to hang onto dear life. This twist won’t be a surprise to anyone who already heard the news that Peacemaker will be starring in a TV spin-off series set to debut on the HBO Max streaming service in January 2022.

The Peacemaker show is written by The Suicide Squad’s James Gunn, who will also be directing some of its eight episodes.

Cena will once again play Peacemaker as part of an ensemble cast. Reprising their roles from The Suicide Squad is Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt. Freddie Stroma will play Adrian Chase aka Vigilante, a gun-toting DC Comics anti-hero. Joining them will be two characters created for the show, Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks).

What the Suicide Squad Ending Means

Though no official plot details have been released, the post-credits scene leads us to believe the show will follow Peacemaker on whatever new mission he’s been assigned. Given how his secret mission to destroy all evidence linking the United States to Starro was a key point in The Suicide Squad, it wouldn’t surprise us to learn more about how he became Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) special enforcer. Whether or not it will delve into the repercussions of the death of Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag at the hands of Peacemaker remains to be seen.

It’s probably a given that the show will delve into Peacemaker’s backstory. In the comics, he was a troubled army veteran named Christopher Smith who became dedicated to the contradictory philosophy of achieving peace through whatever violent means necessary. After committing a heinous war crime, he was “rehabilitated” by the US government, and became the costumed anti-hero Peacemaker. So there’s plenty of material for the Peacemaker show to cover.
