The Nintendo Switch OLED model is the latest version of the massively popular hybrid console from Nintendo, and as is the case with all the hot consoles like PS5 and Xbox, it's also tough to find this year.
However, it's not impossible. If you're hoping to give the Switch OLED as a gift for Christmas, or just want to pick one up for yourself, your best bet is to grab yourself a bundle deal. It's not ideal, since you may have to get a game or accessory you don't really want or need, but the alternative is paying scalpers and for the love of Mario please don't do that.
How to Get Nintendo Switch OLED This Black Friday
Right now, GameStop is offering a bundle with the Switch OLED, with Red and Blue Joy-Cons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, and a $50 GameStop gift card.
What Retailers Have Nintendo Switch OLED Available?
Other than GameStop's bundles, none of the other big online retailers have Switch OLED available, but that could very well change. Unlike the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, you can occasionally happen across Switch OLED models in stock at brick-and-mortar stores. I was able to pick one up from the floor of my local Walmart, for example.
What's the Difference Between Switch OLED and Regular Switch?
Apart from being available in a new white version, the Switch OLED has an OLED screen. Imagine that! With the OLED screen, you get much more vibrant colors than a regular LED screen, and the contrast and blacks are unparalleled. The difference is really striking over a regular Switch. However, the screen does require more battery power, so the battery life is closer to that of the original model Nintendo Switch. You can expect about 3.5 hours of play with the Switch OLED model compared to up to 9 hours with the Switch model offered in the Mario Kart 8 Black Friday bundle, for example.
The Switch OLED also includes an updated dock, one with an Ethernet adapter, so you can wire in for online play.
How Much Does the Nintendo Switch OLED Cost?
The MSRP for the Switch OLED is $349.99, compared to $299.99 for the regular Switch and $199.99 for the Nintendo Switch Lite. It's up to you whether or not that price seems reasonable. If you have a launch-edition Nintendo Switch, and you can find yourself a Switch OLED, I think the upgrade is worth it. However, if you have the most-recent Switch, the tradeoff for handheld visual acuity might not be worth the battery life.
What Games Does the Nintendo Switch OLED Play?
Nintendo Switch games are compatible across the whole family of Nintendo Switch consoles, so there's no worries about compatibility. However, some games, like Metroid Dread, just look incredible on the OLED screen, so if you do get a Switch OLED, get that game, too. Or get one of the dozens of Nintendo Switch Black Friday game deals happening right now.
