The film opens with an explanation of the Red Ribbon Army, describing how they were defeated by Son Goku, and how the single survivor, Dr. Gero, passed on his legacy to Dr. Hedo, his grandson. After a title screen, the movie then cuts to the headquarters of the new Red Ribbon Army, where Carmine and Magenda are discussing Dr. Hedo, who is currently in prison for stealing bodies from a morgue to build androids. We then cut to Magenta, who with some persuading manages to recruit Hedo to help the Red Ribbon Army, mostly because Hedo is excited about making more androids.
Hedo and Magenta discuss how Hedo's parents hated Gero and the Red Ribbon Army, but Hedo just cares about his research and is uninterested in the Red Ribbon Army's goals. However, Magenta suggests that aliens may be plotting to take over the earth through Capsule Corporation. While Cell was Gero's greatest invention, he was defeated, and Android 17 and 18 betrayed him. It's up to Hedo, then, to create the ultimate android – a goal that finally gets Hedo's attention.
We now finally see our heroes, Piccolo, who is watching Gohan and Videl's daughter Pan train, with Piccolo suggesting her aptitude is even better than Gohan's if she can master the fundamentals. Pan says she has never seen her father fight, to which Piccolo replies that he's lost his will to fight. We see Piccolo up on a mountain, flying off, and getting a call from Videl, who sends Piccolo on some errands while Gohan works on his research. Through the conversation, it's clear Gohan isn't the most involved father – can't pick up his kid, isn't helping with Pan's training – which angers Piccolo.
Back on the mountain, Piccolo is attacked by Gamma 2, a new Red Ribbon Army android. The two battle, and the final piece of the clip is Gamma 2 firing his ray gun at Piccolo and causing a giant explosion. We don't see what happens to Piccolo.
Following the first 20 minutes, we got a brief rapidfire trailer that included a shot of Broly, Gohan powering up and taking off his glasses, Piccolo in his police officer costume, and the line “Gohan, listen carefully, you have the potential to be the most powerful being on earth," suggesting Gohan might finally discover his true potential in the film. We know from the discussion before the panel that much of this film will focus, not on Goku and Vegeta, but on Gohan and Piccolo and their bond with one another.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was first announced and named at Comic-Con last year, with a major emphasis on the "superhero" vibes. It follows 2018's successful Dragon Ball Super: Broly and is a continuation of Dragon Ball Super, which stopped producing episodes in 2018. It's headed to theaters in the US and the UK on August 19, and ticket sales are open now.
