What appears to be an accident involving a prop firearm left one crew member dead and another injured on the set of an independent film being shot in New Mexico. Alec Baldwin reportedly discharged the firearm, killing the movie's cinematographer and wounding the director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital following the shooting, where she was pronounced dead. Director Joel Souza is in critical condition.
"We're trying to determine right now how and what type of projectile was used in the firearm," said a spokesperson for the Santa Fe County Sherriff's Office in a statement to the New York Times.
An investigation into the incident is reportedly underway. No charges have been filed as of yet.
Alec Baldwin was filming Rust, an independent Western in which he stars as the titular character. According to a spokesperson from the movie, the prop gun was loaded with blanks that misfired. Filming has been halted for the time being.
