Wednesday: Catherine Zeta-Jones Will Play Morticia In Tim Burton’s Addams Family Spinoff

Netflix's upcoming Tim Burton Addams Family series Wednesday has found its Morticia in Catherine Zeta-Jones.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zeta-Jones has been cast as the matriarch of the Addams Family, Morticia Addams herself. She will star alongside Luis Guzmán who is portraying the debonair Gomez Addams, aka Morticia's husband, and Jenna Ortega who is appearing as the couple's daughter Wednesday in the live-action series.

She will step into the iconic silhouette of Morticia Addams fresh off from playing Dr. Vivian Capshaw in Fox's Prodigal Son. She has starred in numerous other TV projects, including Queen America and Feud: Bette and Joan. Her film credits include The Mask of Zorro, Ocean's Twelve, and Chicago, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Zeta-Jones will appear in Netflix's Wednesday series as a guest star, as the show is said to primarily revolve around its titular character who attends Nevermore Academy and handles all the usual problems facing a young girl with psychic powers, including solving a supernatural mystery and putting a stop to a killing spree that has terrorized the local town.

The Addams Family spinoff is coming from Tim Burton who is serving as director and executive producer on the eight-episode series, hailing from MGM and UA Television. Showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar are also on board as executive producers alongside Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman, and Gail Berman.

Netflix won the bidding war for Wednesday in February 2021, with the series expected to arrive on the streaming platform sometime in 2022. It is the latest in a string of shows that have taken classic properties and added a darker tinge to them, including Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which concluded with a fourth and final part last year.
